Get Ready for Cyber Monday

On November 28, computer screens around the country will be lighting up as shoppers look for deals online.  This shopping phenomenon, which is like a “Black Friday” for the Internet, is referred to as Cyber Monday.

Since the coining of the phrase “Cyber Monday” in 2005, the number of sales each year has increased.  In 2006, online shoppers spent about $610 million purchasing gifts on the Internet.  Compare that to last year’s $1 billion in sales, and the growth is staggering. 

The phrase “Cyber Monday” first appeared in a press released posted by Shop.org about the amazing sales growth retailers were seeing on the Monday following Thanksgiving.  Retailers reported an outstanding 77% increase in sales on that day.

Countries around the world have even started adopting Cyber Monday sales of their own.  In Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Portugal, shoppers can enjoy Cyber Monday discounts.  Cyber Monday has even made its way across the Pacific, to New Zealand, where retailer Belly Beyond held their own Cyber Monday promotion in 2010.

What is so appealing about Cyber Monday?  Why do shoppers flock to their computers instead of to shopping malls?  comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni suggests that there’s several advantages to shopping through the Internet: first, there’s the obvious attraction to the number of discounts companies offer, but second, there’s the protection of secrecy.  Shopping online at work prevents curious family members from spoiling the Christmas surprise.  Plus, some workers may have access to high speed Internet at work that they don’t have access to at home.
